This is the IRC log of K Callan's visit to channel #loiscla on Sunday, February 19, after the initial broadcast of "Top Copy." Action commands have been edited out, and lines moved around for continuity. 55 FOLCs attended the session, which was moderated by Lin-Suen Tan, Heidi Lanam, Joel Thomas, Dave Miller and Michael Williams. The session lasted from approximately 9:20 to 10:45 PST. IRC log started Sun Feb 19 *** JoelT is now known as mod_G-L *** MikeW is now known as mod-s-z *** blaydz is now known as mod-A-F *** grrrman is now known as mod_M-R *** Danny (~Connor@connor.earthlink.net) has joined channel #loiscla Hi Danny. Hey, she's back! Hi K! Heya K. Danny K - LOL! Hello K! Hi Danny! Hi K! (again...) Hi K. Danny glad you made it! Danny- Hooray, I'm glad! Welcome! Hooray for K! You did it! K, would you like to talk about the show first or have the Q&A session? Hello K! Thanks for trying so hard to join us! DO NOT MSG DANNY!!!!! I'm having enough problems, don't message me privately or I'll totally lose it. ALL, K is new to the program, so please bear with her/us. Anyone having problems please message me or Gail /msg zoomway /msg gail So go ahead with your questions. K (danny/Ms. Callan), thank you for stopping by! We really appreciate it, and we hope that you find it as enjoyable as we do! :) I was wondering, what is your favorite ep of the series? I think the Smallville episode. Also the one we are filming next week is going to be fun for me. Ms. Callan In one episode you were working on a quilt. Do you quilt? Was that yours? If you do quilt, do you machine or hand quilt (q's from Nancy, Heidi, Janice, and Gail) Yes, I do quilt and yes, that was my quilt and if we were to still be on in 20 years, I'm sure I would still be working on that quilt. LOL - thank you I'm glad you're finally here with us! My questions is: Are you a mom in the real world? and if so, how much like Martha are you really? I'm a big time mom. I have three grown children who are all super and I am very like Martha. In tonight's episode, those were my own paint stained overalls that I was wearing. Boys and or girls? or Men and/or Women ... :^) I have two daughers. They have a band now known as "Lucky". They put out a couple of albums as "Wednesday Week" and were on Arsenio Hall. My son got his PdD last year in artificial intelligence from UMass and is on the research faculty t wife have 2 kids...a son 6 and a daughter, 4. you must be very proud! Danny - wow...congrats. I am. As a young woman, I might not have had children if I had had the choice, but I was a Catholic and that's what you did in those days. And it has turned out that my kids have been the most rewarding and fulfilling part of a pretty te K - this is from sam...It's so great to have you here! We have all seen Martha's interesting art creations - are you artistic in "real" life? or did you suggest Martha have these talents? I really love this aspect of her. I really have no "artistic" talent in the painting the picture variety. Welding or holagrams I might be able to manage. As a matter of fact, I did learn to weld the art for the pilot, but we ran out of money and didn't get to shoot that K, of the roles you've played throughout your career, which has been your favorite? (By the way, I'm sure everyone will get a kick out of knowing how you got your nick "Danny" ) if you need to take an 'action' so you won't 'timeout' try pinging someone occasionally /ping nick the time I was a young girl, I was designing my formals for proms and getting someone to sew them for me, so I've always had an eye for things. Someone just sent me a private message again. Please, it's nervewracking. it makes my screen go screwy and it takes me a while to figure out how to get back on track. Hello! Welcome to the LOISCLA mad house!! :) Could you tell us a little about your audition for Martha Kent? Also, thank you so much for your patience in joining us...we know how frustrating the IRC can be. :) My favorite role? Gee. I loved doing the film "Joe" because that was a role that gave me visibility in the business and I loved the part I played on "All in the Family," but I really do love Martha. K - I love the scene in The Source where Martha is fixing the tap. Was the "fix-it" idea your input or was that part of the character? K - You can't type more than 160 or so characters, so you can do your responses in two or three parts. Sorry. Please do not send Messages to Danny. K - No need to apologize! Yes, it was my idea to fix the tap. Otherwise, it was bring food again! Would you like Mel to ask her question again? Yes, what was it? The audition? mods: hold up we need to temporarily back track. Laurel didn't get through Danny - yes. That was the question. Please, everyone joining the channel DO NOT message Danny! When I auditioned for Martha, she was not a regular character on the show, just for the pilot, so I didn't have to go to network or anything. I went in and met Deborah Joy and others. I was in a big conflict on how to dress. Traditionally Martha is seen in a different way with a little blouse and skirt, etc. etc. and I didn't want to go in that way. It took real courage to go in in my sweats and a red turtleneck t-shirt. Every other actress there was dressed as you might expect, but my take on Martha was as she is now and I think I influenced how the character went and the fact that we got added to the regular cast. If you have a question for K send to the mod who corresponds with your name alphabetically Mods are: Mod_A-F, Mod_G-L, Mod_M-R, and Mod_S-Z Wow...congratulations!! And thank you for being here tonight! :) Thanks. I feel really blessed to be a part of L&C. I only wish DJ were still here. K- laser? Holograms? Kryptonite lipstick? Do y'all ever have a problem keeping a straight face during the pseudoscientific stuff? Gee no. I play with lasers and holograms right here at home. My brothers' question: they wanted to know how much you, Eddie Jones, Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher are like your on-screen personas? Well, that's hard to say because as an actor, if you are doing it right, your character begins to get on you. I'm not looking for any jobs playing characters with dread diseases. But, I would say that Eddie isn't very much like Jonathan, except that he's a very nice man and that Teri is really different from Lois and that Dean is a little like Clark. Teri would never sit still for some guy walking away from her all the time. From all the FOLCs, K, I'd just like to say welcome and thanks! I recently learned from Teri that she added Lois' chocolate loving to the character. Are there any characteristics you've added to Ma Kent? :) And by the way, we all hope you don't play any characters with dreaded diseases also. After all, Outbreak is filming at Warner Brothers...Perri and I saw it when we visited and met Teri I think I add stuff all the time. The quilting and so on. If we ever get back to Smallville, I have a bunch of things. Diane, when were you there Danny- We were there in December, the 16th I believe. :) Sorry we missed you! Me, too. Danny- But I will be going back. :) Well, if I'm there, surely you will stop by and say 'Hello'. We will, if we can find your trailer! :) Thanks so much for coming (and coping) K! I'm wondering why Martha always uses the cordless and Jonathan always uses the "older" phone. Is it because she's more hip? Or just coincidence? I think I run faster than Eddie. HA! LOL! K thanks for hanging in there. My question: on DS9 and on L&C you have to deal with special fX. Do you like working with them? and what problems have you had with Sfx. I haven't worked with many, but in one show, Clark had a fever and the thermometer burst. They put up a heavy piece of glass in front of my face and burst it and believe me, that was not acting! I almost jumped across the room! Hi Danny K :) If there was one L&C story you'd like to see, which would it be? Other than one having Martha and Jonathan in every other scene that is :) Oh Tara, you are my friend! I would like to see more character stuff of people reacting to each other more. I want Clark to come home and bring Lois and have us all be together. I think it would be great to have Perry and Jimmy there. I guess if there ever really is a wedding, perhaps that might happen. Except that weddings are K, to avoid us interrupting you, can you please say "next question" or something after you finish answering? usually at the bride's home. I like being your friend, "Mom" :) Thanks. next question Aloha K, I've read that if you want to write for a particular show (L&C) that you should submit scripts to the show, through your agent, for other shows instead because the scriptwriters tend to be overprotective. Is there any truth to this K? There could be some truth to that although I have never heard that. I know that relative to WGA guidelines, a certain number of scripts have to be from other than staff, so it seems odd if that were true. NQ mahalo (thank you) K :) You're welcome. Next. K: Thanks for being here tonite...How do you like playing Superman's mom, can I trade places with you, and are your books currently available? ;-) I love playing Superman's mom. My books are in bookstores all over the world. In the US both Barnes & Noble and Crown as well as almost any bookstore have them or can get them. Not into trading places at the moment. A few years ago, maybe. Not this moment in time. Next? K, We know that Paul brings in summaries of the list to the set, have you seen them, and if so, what is your impression of us? I've only begun seeing them. I'm not on the set that often and usually they are long gone by the time I get there or if they are new, people with more seniority get them first. I've seen some lately though. My impression? Well, since you all know we read them and want to read them, it seems to me sometimes like it would be more considerate if you spoke using words that you would actually use with someone if you met them at a party. It hurts people's feelings sometimes when you speak ill of them. next? Anyone with difficulties please /msg zoomway or gail for help K: So how does Net-surfing feel? :) Seriously, though, are you doing any other screenwork now or in the immediate future? BTW, your take on Martha Kent is more refreshing than the way she's portrayed in the comics. Thanks. I'm hoping to do something during hiatus. This year has been tough, though. My agent calls me to go on things and I've been busy finishing up a book I had to get out or starting another. I love the books and they have to be updated every two years or so and it's hard to stay focused for auditions when I'm racing a deadlne. next. Thanks for taking the time out to visit us. K, thanks for your patience tonight. Do you think the series would be hurt by a storyline where Lois found out Clark's secret identity? Well, I think so, but we can't go on forever having Clark just dump Lois because he has to return cassette tapes and not expect her to commit murder. They're pondering. Who knows? Next. why is it that there is such a lack of minorities on the show? it doesn't detract from things any, but it doesn't add to it any... the one episode with chinese was so stereotypical... I think they were better about that last year. I don't think it's anyone's fault, but for minorities to show up regularly that has to be on someone's agenda. I think it was on DJ's. Next. K - you are so sweet to meet with us - I wanted to ask one more thing (that's a lie - I have at least 20 more questions but I'll be nice ;^) What do you remember about your guest role on Quantum Leap? Anything interesting to tell us about? Funny you should ask about QL, I went to the Leapers convention today. Mostly I just remember what a great team of people they all were. The director was great and Scott and Dean were so generous. Next. Hi K! How do you think DJL departure has affected the show? Did you prefer her ideas or the ones which are currently setting the direction of the show? Do you notice this is taking a long time to answer? I'll say this. I love DJ. AND DJ hired Jackson and Blake and maybe even McNamara. Next. .msg Mod_a-f sorry! No, don't be sorry. I love these guys this year. They have a hard time. It's not the story they originated. They are so generous and available to all of us. They have a very tough job. So did DJ, that's why she left. She didn't get to tell it her way. These guys don't either. DC Comics and the network and WB all have their say. And these guy write round the clock. I love them. I miss DJ. She hired me and supported what I wanted to do with the character, but our current staff are people I really respect. I think they do good work. I wish everyone would know how good they are. Even if they don't write me into every episode. Next. Judging from the second season, in what direction do you want to see the show head? More romance... a get togther.. more action ? I would like to see more emphasis on the characters on the show. I think people tune in to see L&C and Perry and Jimmy and the Kents. I would like to see more of the regulars and less of the villains after they set the story in action. As far as romance I know you all want that, but I think all the little kids who watch just go "ick" every time that starts. Next. k - do you think the Kents will ever get on the Internet - sure save on the long distance bills! K, I enjoyed seeing you on fX's Breakfast Time program... do you have any other talk show appearances coming up we should know about? Perri: well, we can always fax. I'm doing some radio show tomorrow night and did Tom Snyder on Friday. Next. I guess it's _really_ my turn now? K, any other talk show appearances we can look for I think I just answered that. I've done a lot of talk shows over time, but I think Fx is really one of my favorites. They are so cool. K, Thanks for being so patient. I'm really glad this Q&A session is running smoothly. My Q is, What TV shows do you watch? and is there a show you'd like to guest star in? Yes, I would love to work on NYPD Blue. next Greetings, K! I absolutely love Martha's quips to Clark, such as "they don't call 'em tights for nothing" or pushing him off the ledge to help him remember how to fly. Any favorites of yours? Did you get to influence any of these classic lines/ actions? Well, I think you just mentioned my two all time favorites. If I could think of anything that great to say, I'm sure they would use it. By the time the script gets to me, they have already out clever-ed me. Next. K, I am asking a question on behalf of Heidi Lanam, one of our moderators; Is "K" your stage name? If so, may we ask your "real" name? My birth name is Katherine. I was never called that. I was "Kay" until I was about 20 and my husband thought just making it "K" would be neat. At this point, that single "K" is all I have of my original name as Callan was/is his name. And that "K" is plenty. MODS - please /msg me with the no. of Q's you have left. I'll come again and answer if you like, but for now, I'm sure you've got lots to say to each other. K, it's a real pleasure meeting you. I really enjoy your unique portayal of Martha Kent. I was wondering why did you decide to audition for this role, and what attracted you to this particular role? I really enjoyed being here. Thank you for asking me. Wait, I'll answer Ming before I go. Every actress in town wanted this role because it was so well written. Not many people get to audition for each role, so it was a prize to get to audition. Next Suen, tell me when it's the last question. K - I've been told that you're more than welcome to stay longer tonight if you want to. Danny - one more question. Okay, I'll stay another 10 or so. Thanks for being here with us. Although the show is about L&C are there any plans to get Martha and Jonothan more entwined in the plots? K - okay...I think there are about 5 more questions in total. sorry Suen. Victor. Well, the next show is wonderful for it. It's time travel and I get to play myself at 30 and then 100 years before as well. next Hello again, Ms Callan. :) A bit of a silly question this time, but I was wondering what you like to do while online. Last time, Teri told us she was sipping a glass of wine while typing frantically, and I personally am trying to balance a tub of Ben and Jerry's while typing. Any favorite activity of yours, or favorite food, that you're currently hankering for? MODS - One more round after this. Not at the moment, but I'm a big fan of Fritos (a Texas gal, after all) and although I get deathly ill when I eat white refined sugar, I have learned some great things to eat that are made with fructose. Tonight, however, I'm just so happy to actually not lose connection that I am not pushing my luck. Next. Danny- The internet always makes me hungry, as my fellow FOLCs can attest. :) I should stay away from the sugar too! Hi K. Thanks for sticking it out. After tonight's episode, the real discoverer of Clark's identity will be pondered at length.. Since you and Eddie will have a large role in this, who would you (personally) like to see discover the identity - Perry, Jimmy, or Lois... Personally I don't want anyone to know but us. If no one else knows, then he has to turn to us. But, of course, my answer would be Lois. She has to find out. soon. for her sanity. next K, this is Dave, affectionately known as the grrrman, I was just wondering if you cheer on for the L&C romance as much as we do? The folc's here get quite explosive about it at times. I'm torn about it. I remember Moonlighting and Cheers and so on. On the other hand, it would open up the stories if Lois knew. I love Teri personally and Lois as Martha, so whatever they do is aces with me. I would love to be able to have confidences with Lois. next Cool thanks! K: so, do you think we could get eborah Joy to do this? :) Now that would be a wild IRC session. And you don't have to go once the Q&A is over, stay and chat if you like :):) I love being the last question, Suen... makes me feel... special... ALL - If you have any more questions for K, E-Mail me: phulse@earthlink.net and I'll forward them on. Goodnight everybody. Bye K, it was great having you here! ;) Good Night K Thank you for stopping by Hope you come by again soon. K Good night from Joel at Dartmouth!!!!! "Night K - talk to you soon! Suen: GREAT JOB wow! * DianeL applauds loudly! LOG SET TO OFF
