Metropolis. Evening. [narrator] Lois is just home from a long day at the office after she and Clark finally wrapped a story they had been following for months. [narrator] She desparately needs to relax. She strips off her suit jacket and kicks off her heels. Just then she feels a breeze. [narrator] She turns to see a familiar red and blue figure standing in her window. [narrator] Her apartment is still dimly lit, and half of the figure is masked by shadow. His cape billows out her window in the crisp winter air. [Lois] Superman. [Superman] Good evening, Lois. I hope this is a good time. [Lois] Anytime, Superman. Absolutely anytime. [Superman] It's a slow night, so I thought maybe we could visit. [narrator] Superman moves hesitantly into Lois' apartment. The light illuminates the opposite side of his body. [Superman] I never seem to see you unles you're hanging from a flag pole, or drowning, or something. [Lois] (/me) looks embarrassed, but she draws closer. [Superman] (still teasing) I guess I wanted to see if you ever just watch tv or play checkers. [Lois] (/me) looks up into his eyes and forgets her embarrassment. [Lois] I like adventure. [Lois] That's why, in the past, I've been so drawn to you. [narrator] As she says this, she touches his arm. Superman stiffens. [Lois] What is it? [Superman] I . . . I got a chill just now. [Lois] Did I do that? (as a smile creeps across her face) [narrator] Superman's head begins to swim. His body swells with emotion -- both joy and pain. He finds it hard to think straight. [Superman] (/me) thinks, "I have to remain composed. I could give something away. She could figure it out." [narrator] After a brief flash of light, the feeling passes and he sees Lois' angelic face still staring up into his eyes. [Lois] Superman? [Superman] What? I'm sorry. What did you ask? [Lois] I asked if you would take me flying. [Superman] Now? It's late. Aren't you tired, Lois? [Lois] It would be the best thing to help me relax. Please. For just a few minutes. [narrator] He takes her hands in both of his. [Superman] It would be my pleasure. [narrator] They smile deeply at each other. A red cape flashes, and they are gone. [narrator] Scene change. Metropolis Police 12th Precinct. 12:02 a.m. [narrator] The doors burst open, and Superman staggers in. His face is stricken with panic and horror. [Superman] Henderson! I have to see Inspector Henderson! [Nite_Cop] Hold it, big fella. He's out on call. Whydoncha-- [Superman] Where?! Tell me where! [narrator] At this moment, Henderson enters. [Henderson] Superman, what is it? [Superman] It's Lois. You've got to help me. [Superman] I think I may be responsible . . . [Superman] for her DEATH. [narrator] Onlookers gasp. [Mayson] When I questioned Inspector Henderson yesterday, I asked if you were provided dry clothes at the police station. He stated that you were dry. [Mayson] Were you in fact dry, Superman? [Superman] (thinking) Yes, I was dry. [Mayson] Not even a little dampness in your thick cape or a little squishing at the bottom of your boots? [Superman] No, Ms. Drake, I was thoroughly dry by then. [Mayson] Henderson stated that you flew directly from Hob's Bay to the 12th precinct. Is that correct? [Superman] Yes. [Mayson] How long did it take you to fly from the bay to the station? [Superman] Approximately 2 to 3 seconds. [Mayson] After having gone to the bottom of the bay, you were completely dry in 3 seconds? [Superman] I fly pretty fast. [Mayson] Please answer the question. [Superman] Yes, Ms. Drake, I was dry. [Mayson] You told police you arrived at Ms. Lane's residence at approximately 10:15 p.m. Correct? [Superman] Yes, ma'am. [Mayson] And you stayed there no more than 15 minutes, before you took Ms. Lane from her apartment? [Superman] We left together after less than 15 minutes, yes. [Mayson] How long were you flying before you dropped Ms. Lane? [Public_Def] Objection! [Mayson] I'll rephrase. How long before you and Ms. Lane were separated? [Superman] We had been flying a good 30 minutes. [Mayson] That would put us at no later than 11 p.m. Yet, you didn't arrive at the precinct until just after midnight. [Mayson] Where were you from 11 p.m. until 12 midnight, Mr. Superman? [Superman] As I said, I looked for Lois. [Mayson] For an hour? [Superman] I . . . I scoured the sky, then dove into the water, then flew to the precinct. [Mayson] This took a full hour, Mr. Superman? [Superman] (/me) looks obviously confused, as he stammers for words. [narrator] His eyes fall upon Lois' mother, whose face implores him to find an answer. [Superman] (/me) looks at Lucy, Uncle Mike, and Mr. Lane. They all look as though they are standing on the edge of a precipice, praying that they will not fall. [Superman] We must have left later, or flew longer, or . . . maybe I looked some other places -- [Mayson] Maybe you had to dispose of the body. [Superman] No! [Public_Def] Objection, Your Honor! [Judge] Sustained. [Mayson] Did you go somewhere else, Superman, after diving into the Bay?! [Superman] I . . . [Mayson] Did you?! [Superman] No! I went straight to the precinct for help. [Mayson] And it took you an hour to fly there? [Superman] No! I don't know! I don't . . . know. [narrator] Superman looks again at Lois' family. His words have come like a great wind, blowing the life out of them and sending their bodies over that precipice. He has gone with them, falling into despair. [narrator] Superman is excused and allowed to go collect himself. And, the proscecution's case draws to a close. Clark sits on a bench, waiting for his parents to exit. The courtroom door creaks open, and a single female slips out. It is Lucy Lane. [Lucy] Clark? [Clark] Is it over? [Lucy] It's breaking up for the day. People should be cming out any second. [Lucy] I came out to find you. You haven't been to any of the proceedings. [Clark] I've been here, Lucy. [Lucy] Couldn't bear to go in, huh? I haven't wanted to either. It's like, if I don't go in, maybe none of this will really be happening. [Lucy] I just wanted to tell you it's okay. I know you still want to believe in Superman. I know he's your friend too. [Lucy] (/me) gives Clark a hug. [narrator] Hugging her back, Clark feels a chill. Shocked, he pulls back. [Clark] Lucy. Are you wearing Lois' jacket? [Lucy] Yeah. She left it on her couch before she went off with Superman. [Lucy] I wore it because it makes me feel closer to her. [Clark] Turn around for a minute. I think there's something on the back of it. [Lucy] (/me) turns her back to Clark. [narrator] He lowers his glasses and visually magnifies the fibers of the jacket. [x-ray] - - - - - - - * * * [Clark] Kryptonite particles! [Lucy] What? [Clark] Nothing. I just remembered something I forgot -- I mean, tell my parents I had to go to Lois' apartment. [Lucy] Clark, wait! [Clark] (/me) rushes out of the courthouse. [narrator] He starts to change into his red and blues when he realizes he is caught up in a sea of reporters streaming from the courthouse with him. [narrator] He decides to make his way to Lois' apartment as Clark Kent. Twenty minutes later. [narrator] Clark is entering with a key borrowed from Mr. Truzuski. [Clark] (/me) stoops beneath the yellow police banner to enter. [Clark] Gotta get out now!! [narrator] He staggers back to the door. He stumbles out and into Jimmy Olsen's arms. [Jimmy] CK! [Jack] Clark, are you okay? [Clark] I'm fine. I just got a little dizzy. [Jimmy] You shouldn't have come here so soon. [Clark] Why are you two here? [Jack] I tol you I'd meet you at court today. Lois' sister told Jimmy where you went. [Clark] I had to feed Lois' fish. [Jack] Listen to me, Clark. I think I have a lead. [Clark] What? [Jack] Ya remember Darren Romick, the magician? [Clark] Sure, his assistant, Constance tried to manipulate world events through hypnosis, and -- [Jack] Yeah, I know all about it. Remember all that talk about magic and illusions that Arianna was babbling? [Clark] Uh huh. [Jack] It made me think about a recent breakout I'd heard about. Word was that some hypnotist chick was being busted out of a federal lockup way up-state. But, local guys had been hired to help her. [Jack] I did some checking, and it was Constance. Word was she was busted out to do a special job. [Clark] When was this? [Jack] About a week ago. [Jimmy] How do you know all this? [Jack] From my time on the street. I still know guys who know guys. [Jimmy] Do these same guys know where she is now. [Jack] They gave me a possible location. A abandoned factory in Suicide Slum. [Clark] Tell me where it is, and you go call the police. [Jimmy] Not such a good idea, CK, with the way you been acting. [Jack] Agreed, I'll take you there. Fifteen minutes later. [Jimmy] It's boarded up. How are we going to get in? [Clark] That window. There's a crack between the boards. Maybe we can look in. [narrator] The three young men crowd around the window. [Clark] (/me) scans the interior of the factory, as Jimmy and Jack strain to see. [narrator] Clark sees Lois, lifeless and tied to a chair. He aslo sees Constance and Lex Luthor watching television news reports about Superman's trial. [Clark] Luthor! [Jack] What? [Clark] I said SUPER . . . man. We need him. Lois is in there! [Jimmy] How could you see? [Clark] There's no time. I've got to get Superman. [narrator] Clark races around the corner of the building and disappears. [Jimmy] Wait, CK! I've got my supersonic watch! [Jimmy] He's gone. [Jack] Try it anyway. Clark'll be back. [narrator] Just as Jimmy turns on the high pitch beacon, Superman flies down. [Jimmy] Superman! That was fast! [Superman] I heard your call. What is it? [Jack] It's Lois. We think she's inside. [Superman] Go call the police, both of you.. [narrator] Without another word, Superman flies through a high window on the opposite side of the factory. Glass rains down on Lex and Constance. [narrator] Quickly, Lex leaps behind Lois and puts a gun to her back. Superman freezes. [Superman] It's over, Luthor. Let her go. [Lex] I bet you thought I was nothing but ashes by now. [Lex] You thought my body was cremated by accident in some mix-up at the morgue. [Lex] You dreamed about it at night. My death . . . my burial . . . my cremation [Lex] MY ANNIHILATION! [Lex] Well, now I shall revenge my foul and most unnatural murder. [Lex] Ashes to ashes, Superman, dust to dust! [Constance] (/me) flings a bucket of Kryptonite dust all over Superman. [Superman] (/me) writhes in pain. [narrator] Meanwhile, outside the warehouse . . . [Jack] Clark will call the police while he's gone. Let's get in there. [Jimmy] Move that dumpster over here. I think we can get in through that top window. [narrator] Back inside . . . [Superman] (/me) is in agony. [Constance] The moon and the stars. [Superman] (/me) stands up straight and gazes ahead. [Lex] As you can see Superman, Arianna didn't use all my reserve of Kryptonite on that ill-fated magic bullet. [Lex] Watching you die slowly of guilt after dropping poor Lois was pleasurable, especially, since you never took Lois flying at all. But, this meeting is a far greater pleasure. [narrator] Jimmy and Jack successfully climb into the factory and onto a catwalk. [Lex] It's amazing what a little hypnotic suggestion and some virtual reality can do to the memory. Of course, we first weakened that inhuman immune system of yours with a little of this pixie dust. [Lex] But that's all water under the bridge, or shall I say water over Lois' head? Somehow, you figured it out, as you often do. You and I have a tragicomic bond, Superman. But, I've never been sentimental. [narrator] Jimmy and Jack work furiously on the nozzle of a water pipe. [Lex] So, if you'll excuse me, Lois and I have a plane to catch. We'll leave you to the ravages of the dust. [narrator] The boys release the nozzle, drenching Superman, Lois, Constance, and Lex. [Lex] (/me) shots at the boys, but hits mostly pipes. [narrator] The boys scream at each other over the sound of gunfire. [Jack] Set off your watch again! [Jimmy] Why?! [Jack] Just do it! [Jimmy] (/me) activates his high-pitch watch. [narrator] The sound wrenches Superman from his trance. Lex fires at Superman, but he only creates the clicking sound of an empty round. [narrator] Lex and Constance beat a hasty retreat as Superman again reacts to the pain of the Kryptonite. [Superman] (/me) moves underneath a steady stream of water to wash off the rest of the Kryptonite. [narrator] Jack and Jimmy climb down to the ground level. [Jack] Superman, are you alright? [Superman] I will be soon. The important thing is whether Lois is okay. [Jimmy] She's still out of it, Superman. [Jack] Luthor's getting away. Can you see where he went. [Superman] I'm afraid I can bearly see at all right now. Let me talk to Lois. [narrator] Superman approaches Lois and breaks her bonds. He lifts her face into the streaming water, and it rouses her. [Jimmy] Look, she's coming around. [Lois] Superman. I seem to be really tired all of the sudden. Can we have that visit some other night? [Superman] Anytime, Lois. Anytime. The next morning. There is a knock at Clark's door. [Clark] (/me) opens the door without scanning the visitor first. [Clark] Lois! You're not going to work today, are you. [Lois] Of course, can I come in? [Clark] Yeah, can I get you some breakfast? [Lois] No, we've got work to do Kent. [Clark] You mean finding Lex? [Lois] Among other things. We don't even know why he's alive. Superman didn't tell me. [Clark] I think he's counting on us to figure that out. [Lois] All the more reason to get going. [Clark] We don't have to figure it all out today, Lois. Besides I'm not convinced that was the real Lex Luthor anyway. [Lois] Why do you say that? [Clark] Something he said -- I mean something Superman said about it being dark and not getting a good look at him. [Lois] Superman hindered by darkness. Gimme a break. Now let's get cracking. [Clark] No. [Lois] No? [Clark] No. [Lois] It must be really early. I'm not hearing you correc-- [Clark] You heard me. You may not remember the last few days, but I do, and they were hell. [Clark] For once, I'm going to sit down, relax, and enjoy the company of my best friend. [Clark] You are going to sit at my table. I am going to make us breakfast. And, we are going to talk about all things great, small, and non-work related. [Lois] Clark, before we do. I want to clear something up first. [Clark] What's that? [Lois] I never asked Superman to take me flying. [Clark] You didn't? [Lois] That must have been part of his hypnotic suggestion. The last thing I remember is being grabbed from behind. [Clark] Were you going to ask him? [Lois] I don't know. I don't think so. I just wanted to say something to you, because everyone's going around saying I'm his girlfriend, when I don't feel that it's true. [Clark] What do you feel? [Lois] I feel hungry. Where's that breakfast? [narrator] They share a smile. [Lois] Seriously? I'm sort of confused. I do know one thing though. Superman thought I was dead, but you never gave up on me. Not on me or Superman. Mayson told me about your visit to her office. And Jack and Jimmy told me what all you did. [Lois] I want to thank you, partner. [Clark] You both are very important to me. [Lois] You both are to me too, but I feel a lot closer to you than I ever have to Superman. [Lois] Superman may be the strongman, but you give me a strength that I didn't know I had. [Clark] Likewise. FINE
