THE GREEN, GREEN GLOW OF HOME ----------------------------- US Airdate 11/14/93 Written by Bryce Zabel Directed by Les Landau Superman, soaring over Metropolis, hears someone screaming for help as their car is stolen. As the car rounds a corner, Superman swoops down and stops the thief, who jumps out and begins to run down the street. Looking behind him at first, he finally turns his head just as he runs into Superman. He pulls out his gun and fires several shots, each of which Superman catches. Dumbfounded, the crook asks if anything hurts him, to which Superman replies with a grin, "Not so far!" Meanwhile, Jonathan and Martha Kent receive a knock on their door, and Jonathan opens it up to greet a neighbor, Wayne Irig. He takes Jonathan out- side and tells him that a tree had been uprooted from his yard during a recent storm, and underneath the tree he had found a strange rock. He sent a sample of the rock to a laboratory, and now federal agents are snooping around and have bulldozers ready to dig. Having decided that the rock was probably valuable, he had brought it with him. He then opens up the crate to show Jonathan the glowing green rock. The following day, Jimmy comes racing into the newsroom, showing off his latest acquisition: a prototype signal watch invented by STAR Labs to help the Air Force find downed pilots. Meanwhile, Clark is relating the story about Irig to Perry and Lois. Perry thinks that it will make an interesting piece and assigns Lois and Clark to the story. Clark begins to hear a high pitched whine and goes to find the source, while Lois tries to weasel her way out of the trip to Smallville. Clark takes the watch away from Cat, who had activated the supersonic alarm, and turns it off, suggesting to Jimmy that maybe he should only use it in an emergency. Lois and Clark drive to Smallville. All the while, Lois continues to make disparaging remarks about small town life. And when Clark tells her all about the Smallville Corn Festival, she is less than enthusiastic. Upon their arrival, they proceed immediately to the Irig farm, where they meet Carol Sherman, the EPA liaison. She informs them that what's happening is an ecological risk assessment -- that Irig had used a lot of pesticides years ago, and the EPA is interested in determining the amount of damage. Smelling nothing unusual, Lois prompts Clark to leave. He once again brings up the festival, specifically mentioning caramel apples. Having expected a smart remark from Lois (since she had made them about everything else), he asks her where the joke about caramel apples is. She simply replies, "I love caramel apples!" As they leave, Sherman proceeds inside the main tent at the site, where Trask is interrogating Irig about the location of the rock. She complains that he had told her that Irig had been relocated and asks when the EPA began using interrogations. Trask explains that the EPA doesn't, but Bureau 39 does. He refuses to give her any additional information about Bureau 39, and when she mentions leaving, he threatens her and her daughter. She backs down and tells him about the visit by Lois and Clark. He finds this promising, as Superman can't be far behind! Lois and Clark arrive downtown at the festival, where they run into Clark's Senior Prom date, Rachel, who is now the sheriff. She tells Lois that they will have to exchange Clark stories later and is then called away. They continue on, and Lois makes more remarks about small town life. Clark accuses her of being uncomfortable simply because everything is so normal. She claims to have heard of "these small towns." As an example, she points to the cook at a barbecue grill and identifies him as a probable cross-dresser. At about this time, Martha comes up and introduces herself to Lois and comments about how pretty Lois is, slightly embarrassing Clark. She then invites them to go with her for some food. Clark tells her what Lois said about the cook, causing her to laugh and reveal to Lois that the cook is Clark's father! Now, Lois is the one embarrassed. They return that night to the Kents' farmhouse, where Clark tells his parents that they will need to receive a fax that night. When Martha asks, "A fax?", Lois gives her a technical explanation of what a fax is. She is once again embarrassed when Martha uncovers their fax machine and explains that she just thought she should check the paper! She and Jonathan leave Lois and Clark alone for a minute, prompting Clark to ask her how she's doing so far. Just a little upset, she brings up each of her mistakes and sarcastically responds that she's doing great. Clark's parents return, and Martha puts Lois into Clark's room while letting Clark have the couch. She hesitates just a minute and then says, "Unless you two..." They respond quickly with a "No!" As Martha leads Lois off to Clark's room, she turns and mouths to Clark, "I love her!" After the girls are gone, Jonathan take Clark out to the barn, where he tells him about Irig's rock. He explains that Wayne left the rock in his care so that the feds wouldn't get it. He pulls down the case and opens it up so that Clark can see it, and Clark begins to feel strange. He tells Jonathan that he's not feeling well all of a sudden and Jonathan asks if he thinks it could be the rock. He turns to face Clark just as Clark collapses. After calling for Martha, they help Clark into the kitchen, where she notices that Clark is burning up. She places a thermometer in his mouth. but it explodes seconds later. Clark mentions that he feels a little better, which Jonathan doesn't quite understand until Martha points out that being sick is a new experience for Clark. Clark is understandably disturbed when he can't even lift a jug of water to pour himself a drink. Lois happens in, thinking that she heard the fax machine, and notices that Clark looks horrible. The Kents make an excuse about Clark having allergies which are bad at this time of the year. She tells him to feel better and then returns to her room. The next morning, they return to the Irig farm, armed with an EPA clean-up list which does not include Smallville. After he gets out of the car and Lois proceeds to look for Sherman, Clark tries unsuccessfully to lift the car. When presented with the information, Sherman produces paperwork of her own, including an updated EPA list. Clark attempts to look inside the tent, but his x-ray vision fails him. Lois remains unconvinced of their story, but she and Clark leave anyway. Inside, Trask tells Sherman that they are searching for a meteorite, that he believes this meteorite probably came from Krypton, and that he believes it might be fatal to Superman. Lois and Clark go to the festival for lunch, where their waitress recognizes Clark and mentions Lois' romance novel. He quickly explains that he probably told his mother, and Lois adds that she probably told the whole town! The waitress then explains that's just how small towns are. Since everyone seems to know so much about her, Lois then asks the waitress when she's going to learn some dirt on Clark -- but she replies that with Clark, what you see is what you get. Clark then starts to unwrap his food and gets a paper cut, shocked at the fact that he is bleeding. Lois is astonished that it his first paper cut. Their lunch is interrupted by a phone call from Wayne Irig, who claims that he has gone to Salt Lake City to stay with some relatives. However, the fact that he refuses to give a number and sounds very strange makes Lois and Clark both suspicious. Lois begins to ask around about Irig. Meanwhile, Clark spends some more time with his parents, and then shows them that he is still not back up to strength by trying to "ring the bell and win a prize." But his effort falls short. As they begin to walk away, Lois walks up wearing a beautiful country-style dress, pleasantly surprising Clark. She explains, "when in Smallville..." That night at the dance, Clark discovers that Lois can line dance. A friend of hers had convinced her that it was a good way to meet guys. After the dance, Lois convinces Clark to try again to ring the bell. The result is that his attempt is a bit better than before. He tries again and then once more, with his final attempt ringing the bell. Lois is given the choice of a Superman doll or a teddy bear as the prize. She again surprises Clark by choosing the teddy bear. As they walk off, she comments on how relaxed Clark is here. Jimmy rushes into Perry's office and catches him meditating to the sounds of the rainforest. He tells him that Clark is on the phone. As he listens to Clark explain that the story looks like a dead end and that Lois should head back while he wraps it up, Cat rushes in and tells him that Lois is on the other line. She proceeds to tell Perry that they are onto something big! Perry tells them that he'll get back to them as they realize that they are each talking to him. Perry decides to go with Lois' instinct and to send a photographer. When he discovers that all of the photographers are out on assignments, he reluctantly agrees to give Jimmy a chance. Jimmy hugs him and begins to rush out, but Perry reprimands him and orders him *never* to hug him again! Lois and Clark return to the Irig farm, where they begin to spy on the operation from the bushes. But they are surprised by commandos dropping from the trees who take them captive. They are then taken (Lois struggling both physically and verbally the whole way) to Trask, who explains that he let Irig go when it became clear that he wasn't going to give up the location of the rock. Lois becomes very annoying to Trask; so he has her tied up in the tent. He then turns to Clark and demands that Clark give up Superman's location, but Clark refuses. Just then, Trask receives a report that Irig is heading to the Kents' farm. Jonathan and Martha are in the barn deciding what to do about the meteorite when Irig stumbles in sweating profusely and with one hand tightly bandaged. Meanwhile, Jimmy has arrived at the Irig place and is taking photos from the bushes when he sees Clark being loaded into a van. He goes for help. Back at the Kents', Irig explains what has happened to him and that they need to go to the police. Jonathan asks Wayne to trust him that they can't get the police involved. Rather, they need to take the rock and destroy it. Trask bursts in at that moment, capturing the Kents and the rock. He then returns to Clark, locked up in the van, and tells him that he has his parents. Getting Trask to promise to free his parents, Clark admits that he is Superman. Trask looks at Clark in disbelief and then pulls out his gun. As he points it at Clark and pulls the trigger, Clark screams in fear for him not to. But the chamber is empty. Trask comments that Superman would not be afraid of a bullet and locks him back into the van. Jimmy runs into town and gets Sheriff Rachel, telling her wild stories about UFOs, aliens, crazy soldiers, and prisoners. She doesn't believe him at first, but when he mentions that he's from the Daily Planet and that his friends are Clark and Lois ("Oh, her."), she gets on the ball and they head to the Irig farm. Meanwhile, Lois convinces Sherman to let her go, and she lets Lois in on Trask's plan -- he's going to burn down the Kents' farm and make it look like an accident. Lois hurriedly calls the sheriff and reroutes her to the Kents'. She also tells Jimmy that Superman may be in danger and that he needs to warn him somehow. So Jimmy activates his signal watch. Back at the farm, Trask lights the fire. Just then, Clark's powers kick in, as evidenced by the sudden sound of the signal watch. He breaks his chains, kicks open the door of the van, jumps out, and sucks up all of the fire, expelling the smoke into the air. He then goes inside to help his parents, but is confronted by Trask. He rushes up to take Trask, but is floored by the effects of the meteorite, which Trask lays on the ground beside Clark. Trask then tells Clark that he is going to kill his parents. At this, Clark struggles to his feet and grabs the meteorite, searing his hands in the process. he then tosses it into the small pond, where it explodes when crashing against a large rock. He and Trask then get into a brawl. At first, Clark is at a disadvantage from the effects of the rock and because of Trask's military training, but eventually he takes control of the fight. The two go tumbling into the pond, where Clark pins Trask up against the large rock and begins to send a crashing blow. Trask tells Clark to kill him -- it's what he would do -- but Clark responds, "That's not how I work!" The police arrive, and as Clark begins to exit the pond, Trask pulls out a gun. Lois screams Clark's name to warn him, but before he has time to react, a shot rings out... Trask slides into the water as the shot came from Rachel's gun. Lois runs up, and she and Clark embrace. Days later, Perry is completely enthralled by the story, but Clark doesn't want to write the story for the paper since he is too close to it. Jimmy is about to give up on the signal watch, when Clark tells him not to, reminding him that Superman (as far as anyone else knows) was in Metropolis at the time. Perry then gives Lois a directive to name the rock which was supposedly a threat to Superman, to give the story a better feel. Since Trask thought it was from Krypton, she suggests Kryptonium. But since it was a meteorite, Clark suggests Kryptonite. Lois complains that Clark is always rewriting her copy, to which he replies that next time she can fight the bad guy and he'll write the story! She gives in. Jimmy then asks how he feels, now that it's all over. Clark responds, "I'm feeling super!" ***************************************************************************** 9. THE MAN OF STEEL BARS --------------------- US Airdate 11/21/93 Written by Paris Qualles Directed by Robert Butler Metropolis is experiencing a blistering heat wave in November, with temperatures around 95 degrees. Lois and Clark, dressed for the heat, make their way to a press conference about the heat wave. They try to hail a cab, but the driver points out the smoke billowing from his engine. Lois moves on towards a sno-cone cart, but before he joins her, Clark takes a moment to cool off the taxi's engine with a blast of super-breath. As he rejoins Lois, she notes in wonder that he isn't even sweating! As they continue on their way, Clark slows for a moment to quickly remove the cap of a fire hydrant, releasing a torrent of water into the street -- much to the delight of the children who had been trying to open the hydrant's valve. At the press conference, Mayor Berkowitz (Sonny Bono) assures the crowd that the weather is not dangerous -- it's safe, but it's just hot! Lois brings up the question of electricity shortages caused by the increased air-conditioner use, prompting Lex to step forward and announce that the LexCorp Nuclear Plant is ready to go on-line and provide more than enough power to the city. Clark mentions the report that the Environmental Impact Committee was withholding their approval pending a safety inspection, but Lex produces said inspection report. Lois finally returns to the subject at hand by asking what is causing the heat. Dr. Goodman and Dr. West, two scientists who have been studying the phenomenon, address the question. They agree that there have been no unusual meteorological activity, but Dr. West suggests that there is another theory. Dr. Goodman vehemently expresses her doubts in the theory, but West proceeds to inform everyone that Superman is to blame. Later, Cat comes waltzing into the newsroom dressed in a bikini, much to Jimmy's approval, and Perry then walks in sporting shorts. The group congregates to discuss the basis of the theory. Jimmy produces a chart which shows that each major super feat since Superman came to Metropolis has cor- responded to a rise in the city's heat. Lois refuses to believe that it's true, but Jimmy points out that most scientists believe that Superman's powers are solar based. Even Clark admits that the connection is possible, but Lois continues to vehemently disbelieve. The discussion is interrupted by reports of a warehouse explosion, and Perry sends Clark to cover the story. He then assigns Lois to the heat wave story, providing her a headline for the afternoon edition: "Super Feat = Super Heat ?" Later that afternoon, Lex reads of the rescue of the workers trapped in the warehouse explosion by Superman. He smirks at Lois' headline and remarks that Superman once again used his powers, then comments how he must reward Superman's deed by supplying more heat. Meanwhile, at the courthouse, the DA announces that she is seeking an injunction against Superman's using his powers, and she expresses her hopes that Superman complies willingly. Lois, now even more upset, asks Jimmy to get his hands on some more charts comparing Superman's feats with the heat rises -- but this time she wants to compare locations. In an unruly courtroom, Superman steps forward and refuses council, stating that he wants to get to the bottom of the matter as much as anyone. He then agrees to abide by the injunction of his own free will. As they begin to leave the court room, a criminal who is being escorted through the court- house breaks free of his guard, takes his gun, and grabs a hostage. Superman ponders the situation briefly and then uses his heat vision to make the gun too hot to handle. He then grabs the criminal and returns him to the custody of the guard. However, even as the room is filled with the applause of the bystanders, the DA points out to the judge that Superman has violated the injunction. She regretfully agrees and places Superman under arrest. Superman is escorted to the police station by SWAT team members and firemen. Upon his arrival he attempts to brace himself against a filing cabinet so that he may be frisked, but he inadvertently knocks it over, leading to a domino effect with the other filing cabinets. He is then moved along to be fingerprinted, but when the officer directs him to press harder, he demolishes the stand. The parade then proceeds to the taking of the mug shots, which turns into a photo shoot for essentially everyone in the station! He then makes his phone call as Clark to Perry, who tells him to stay with Superman until the next hearing. Finally, Superman is placed into a cell with the criminal from the courthouse, as well as others, who begins to taunt Superman. He refers to him as "the Man of Steel Bars" and then slaps his face and steps on his foot, causing a few of the others to back away. The criminal then gets a little bolder, yanking on his cape while exclaiming, "Look! I'm tuggin' on Superman's cape!" To this, someone in the background responds, "What's next? You gonna spit into the wind?" Convinced that Superman will not retaliate, he starts to punch Superman. But Superman dodges quickly to the side, and the punch lands on another large prisoner. Several people gasp, "Ooh! You messed with Jim!" Superman refuses to help as Jim retaliates himself. Back at the court room, the judge reads the charge of contempt, to which Superman pleads not guilty. He then agrees once more to not use his powers and asks to be released on his own recognizance. Just then, however, the DA accidentally knocks a cup off of the table, and Superman levitates to avoid it. She points out that he's obviously a "flight" risk. Perry then stands up to vouch for Superman, but the judge takes it a step further and places Superman in the Daily Planet's custody. Back at the Planet, Jimmy is working on the charts Lois requested, but Lois' sole interest concerns Superman being in Perry's office. She bursts in with her story to be checked, sparing Superman the completion of an Elvis story. Perry glimpses over the copy and tells Lois that she's too close to the story. Cat then comes in as well, and the two ladies begin a glare-down over the Man of Steel. Perry mentions that Superman needs a place to stay, and Lois and Cat both eagerly offer their places. After listening to their bickering, Superman mentions that he could stay with Clark, and Perry agrees. Meanwhile, Dr. West is meeting with Lex, and he expresses concern over the fact that Lex is still using his reactor to cause the heat. Lex thanks him for the reminder and announces that since Superman hasn't used his powers in some while, it is time to reward the citizens of Metropolis -- he lowers the heat about ten degrees. Nigel comes in to bid his boss good night and mentions that the 10:35 is right on schedule. When Dr. West questions this remark, Lex explains that he's arranged a little mishap -- a test for the Man of Steel. At his apartment, Clark begins to use his heat vision to warm some water for coffee, thinks twice, and pulls out a kettle. He is interrupted by Lois' arrival -- she has come to make them dinner. She asks of Superman's whereabouts, and Clark quickly makes an excuse about him being in the shower. This *really* piques her interest: "You mean the suit comes off?" Clark goes to "check on Superman," makes a quick outfit change, and returns to greet Lois. When she asks whether or not he eats, he responds that he doesn't have to eat, but that he does like to eat. They then hear of a runaway express train over the radio, and Lois apologizes that she has to leave. Though he regrets having to violate the injunction, Superman also leaves to rescue the passengers. The temperature continues to rise, now reaching 110 degrees. Jimmy has *some* good news, however -- the charts have shown that the heat increases were localized in areas different from those where Superman was using his powers. Lois is on her way to the courthouse for Superman's sentencing, but she first directs Jimmy to fax his results to Dr. Goodman, the scientist who didn't believe Superman was responsible. Lois arrives outside the courtroom just as Superman emerges. He announces to the media that he has volunteered to leave the city by noon tomorrow. Lois pleads with him that he can't leave, but before he can respond, a young boy walks up to Superman with a long face and throws his Superman doll against Superman's chest. Before Superman has a chance to try to return the doll, the boy is gone. Lois, completely devastated, returns to the Planet. Meanwhile, Clark returns to his apartment to find his parents there. They try to convince Clark not to give up -- they can't believe that his powers are the cause of the problem. After all, he used them in Smallville with no adverse effects. He reminds them that he never used his powers to such an extent in Smallville, and he can't take the chance. Given the fact, he can't stay in Metropolis either -- he would not be able to stand by and watch when people needed his help. He finally tells them that he's made up his mind and that he will be going away. He doesn't know where, but it will be somewhere away from the people he loves most. Before leaving, Clark stops by the Daily Planet, where he finds Lois asleep at her desk. He wakes her up to say good-bye, and she notices that his desk has been boxed up. He tells her that he's leaving to take a job as the editor of the Smallville Post and that he just wanted to say good-bye. She pleads with him not to go -- he's her partner! He reminds her that she doesn't need a partner, but she confesses that she was starting to like it. Finally, she remarks that she knows the real reason he's leaving...he idolizes Superman and can't stand to see him go. She urges him to keep fighting, but he kisses her softly and tells her good-bye. The next day, Lois is in a severe funk, and as a result, everyone is walking on eggshells around her. When Cat tries to console her, she explodes and demands that everyone stop being so nice. Cat finally gets her to calm down and talk, and Lois admits that she's not sure which of them she'll miss more. Dr. Goodman shows up and drags Lois with her, telling her she has to show her the problem. She takes her to the city's aquifer, an underground system of rivers and lakes which are supposed to be a constant 46 degrees, even in summer. But the water is boiling. They consult a map that shows that the heat must be coming from the LexCorp Nuclear Plant. Realizing that would mean a leak from the reactor, which is scheduled to go on line shortly, they conclude that a meltdown is imminent. Inside Lex's penthouse, he is gloating over the fact that Superman has left and he has won. And to top it all off, his reactor is about to supply the city with all the power it needs. Meanwhile, in front of the Daily Planet, a TV reporter is making a live remote broadcast, trashing Superman as the cause of the heat wave. Lois interrupts and makes a plea for Superman to return, announcing their discovery about the nuclear plant, leading the broadcaster to change his tune -- but the crowd doesn't let him get away with it. In front of a large crowd, Lex powers up the reactor just as Superman bursts in with Lois. She explains that there is a leak causing the heat wave, but when Superman tells him to shut down the reactor, Lex explains that's impossible -- a safety feature prevents it from being shut down during the power-up. Superman, against the advice of the scientists on hand, rushes into the reactor core and manually stops the fuel rods from lowering. Later, in his penthouse, all of Lex's glee has disappeared. Not only was the plant a total loss over a small leak which he "had under control," but Superman wasn't even affected by the radiation! Nigel takes the opportunity to point out that LexCorp's air-conditioning division made a 2000% profit over the past three weeks. This lifts Lex's spirits a bit, and he and Nigel celebrate in song: "Look for the Silver Lining!" Perry and Lois are looking out the window at the falling snow when Perry comments that everything's right with the world, but his statement is qualified by an "almost" as they look at Clark's empty desk. Just then, their attention is grabbed by Jimmy's shout of "CK!" as Clark enters the newsroom. Perry accepts him with open arms (The heat makes us do crazy things.), returns his unopened letter of resignation, and orders him back to work. As he returns to his desk, Lois approaches and proclaims that she knew he'd be back. Clark congratulates her for saving Superman, to which she responds that she just couldn't give up. She also tells him that she knew there was no Smallville job, but she guesses that if she can forgive Superman for leaving, then she can forgive him too. "After all, you're only human!" As she returns to her story, Clark looks over her shoulder and comments that she has misspelled the word "aquifer." She glances back at him and warns him off with a sly grin, commenting that he *can* be replaced. "I was already starting to look!" ***************************************************************************** Jeffery D.
