PHEROMONE, MY LOVELY -------------------- US Airdate 11/28/93 Written by Deborah Joy LeVine Directed by Bill D'elia Clark lazily swings his arm over to silence the alarm clock, accidentally smashing it in the process. He makes his way to the kitchen, where he fries some eggs on his plate with a shot of heat vision and then sucks down a gallon of milk, flinging the plastic jug out the window and into a trash can on the street. After he inhales his eggs, he hears the garbage truck arrive and rushes downstairs (in costume) to grab the jug from the back of the truck. He then walks over and places it in a recycling bin, commenting to a watching child, "It's not just garbage anymore!" The daily staff meeting proceeds with Perry's order for Lois to rewrite her story about the fruit fly invasion. Jimmy then wonders aloud why everyone is being told to keep their pets indoors if the Malathion spraying is harmful only to the flies. Suddenly, the outer newsroom is overrun by a mass of people. Perry's anger subsides slightly when Cat reminds him that the newsroom is being used as a backdrop to introduce a new fragrance. She then notices two top models, Elle Taylor and April Stevens, and begs Perry to let her go for interviews. Jimmy is instantly smitten with April, but Perry forces himself back to work, claiming that Alice (his wife) has spies everywhere! After Lex completes his fencing for the day, he is interrupted by an apparent prior love interest, Miranda, who has come to complain about his having cut off her research funding. He claims that though she promised him a fragrance that would cause people to completely lost their inhibitions, she has shown no progress for over two years. Even though she claims that her new formula works, he refuses to hear anything about it or her -- she is an itch who has been scratched. Before she can leave, Lois calls to confirm her dinner date with Lex. Miranda becomes a bit jealous and reminds herself of her invitation to the debut of Exclusive at the Daily Planet. Meanwhile, Clark comes to the conclusion that all of the activity in the newsroom will prevent them from getting any work done. He suggests that they "play hooky," but Lois is appalled. When she admits that she never played hooky in school, Jimmy and Clark give her a "disappointed" look, and she becomes defensive. She claims that she knew how to have fun -- she was in the chess club and the math club! As they continue to heckle her, Miranda walks by spraying her scent, much to the displeasure of everyone's noses! A little later, Lois and Clark are working separately at their desks when Lois turns and gazes at Clark for a moment. She then proceeds to unbutton her collar, reapply her lipstick, and stalk across the room towards Clark. Upon reaching his desk, she mounts on the desk and exposes her leg through the skit in her skirt. Playfully, she asks what he's doing and then mentions how handsome he is today. A bit suspicious, Clark tries to ignore her, but her advances become a bit more physical. Meanwhile, the custodial worker, Rahalia, enters Perry's office, and he suddenly begins to try and woo her, much to her shock and disapproval. Jimmy also begins to show signs of the spray as he begins to hit mercilessly on April Stevens. He claims to have had photographs from Beirut and Bosnia published, but she gives him the brush off. (Of course, Jimmy is unable to see it that way!) And Cat meets the copier repairman in the copy room, where she (ahem) "takes advantage of the situation." :) Lois continues her relentless pursuit of Clark, and when he tells her to "get a grip," she seductively grabs his chest and responds, "I'm trying to!" She tells him that they need to get out of there, and he tells her to wait a moment while he checks things out. As he walks around the office, he finds Perry chasing after Rahalia and spots Cat in the copy room with his x-ray vision. Miranda, having observed the entire transformation, smugly leaves the building. The next morning, Miranda gets in to see Lex by masquerading as his fencing partner. She shows him the Daily Planet headline (Love Prevails!) and tells him that he needs to drop by and check out her handiwork. Mean- while, Clark has returned to the newsroom to find it decorated with flowers, balloons, and other romantic paraphernalia, and nobody is working! Lois, spotting his entrance, quickly arises, runs across the room (in a ridiculous but amazing cheesecake shot :), and jumps into his arms. Perry is at the same time trying to win Rahalia with a love poem, but she informs him that her husband told her to file sexual harassment charges. Back in the newsroom, Clark manages to settle Lois down just a bit, and he asks why she can't tell that everyone is acting out of the ordinary. As he sorts through the memory of when the change occurred, he remembers the woman spraying everybody. Jimmy walks up with a set of photographs from the prior day, but most of them are of April. Clark warns Jimmy to be careful -- he doesn't want to see him get hurt. He then notices a picture of Miranda. Clark decides to go to the newsstand in the lobby of the Planet to look for some clue as to Miranda's identity, and he passes Lex on the way out. Lex then spots Lois, who is waiting for Clark to return. He points out how much things have changed around here, and she simply responds that she hadn't noticed, *much* to his astonishment! He confirms their dinner on Friday, but she adds that it must be strictly professional - Clark Kent is the only man for her! That night, Jimmy follows April to a night club, where he tries unsuccessfully to buy his way in. April then emerges and gives him the snub once more, asking the doorman to take care of him. Jimmy backs down and then edges into the street without looking, where he is nearly hit by an oncoming truck. But Superman swoops down and carries him to safety. Perry, meanwhile, has made his way to the hallway in front of Rahalia's apartment, where he proceeds to do his best Elvis impersonation (in full garb!). Of course, this doesn't sit well with her husband, just as his fist doesn't sit well with Perry's face! In his apartment, Clark fans through the magazines he picked up at the newsstand and comes across Miranda's name and her company's address. He is interrupted by a knock on the door, and he opens it to find Lois dressed in a trenchcoat. She pushes past him, removes the trenchcoat to reveal a very skimpy veiled costume, and begins to dance for him. He pleads with her that even though he's fantasized about this, she should stop and leave. She then pulls close to him and comments that though she's never noticed it before, he looks a lot like Superman! The next morning, Lois awakens in Clark's bed with the symptoms of a hangover. Clark, timing as bad (or is that good?) as ever, bursts into the room exclaiming that he gives in -- he just can't take it anymore. Lois, having finally returned to her senses, shoves him away asking, "Have you lost your mind!?" Then, looking at her attire, she follows with, "Or have I?" After Clark finally pulls her from her embarrassment, explaining that he needs his partner right now, they proceed to Miranda's shop. Miranda there explains about her new scent, Revenge, which is animal based. After a few moments of dallying, Lois finally cuts to the chase and accuses her of causing the problems. While Miranda makes excuses, Clark spots the bottle from one of Jimmy's photographs, grabs it at super-speed, and places it in his pocket. He then takes a moment to listen to her pulse. As they leave, he and Lois agree that Miranda was lying. After her run-in with Lois and Clark, Miranda goes back to see Lex, who apologizes for his mistake in cutting her off. As they are talking, she takes the opportunity to spray Lex with her solution. He points out how the effects wore off quickly, but she responds that she had used a 1% solution -- the purest concentration would cause permanent results. After letting some time pass for the spray to take effect, she asks if there is any personal future for the two of them, but Lex replies that he never mixes "business with other people's pleasure!" After having the fragrance analyzed, Lois and Clark discover that it is composed over pheromones which override a person's normal restraints for about 48 hours. But the effect only magnifies inherent feelings, so Lois has to admit that some part of her is attracted to him. Clark takes that moment to remind her that his lack of reaction must mean that he is not attracted to her, to which she becomes obstinately jealous -- "You are *so* attracted to me!" They also discover that Miranda is funded by Luthor. Back at the Planet, Cat is *still* in the copy room with the repairman, and to keep him there, she rips some cable out of the copier. Perry relates that Rahalia has filed a sexual harassment suit against him and that Alice has kicked him out. The spray gives him an excuse, but Alice still won't take him back right now. That evening at her dinner with Lex, Lois is surprised as he begins to make uninvited advances, commenting that her eyes are "rich, deep pools of light" that a man could drown in and that her hands are like "fine porcelain." He then quotes her some poetry and tells her that she is the most beautiful creature he has ever seen. She gets a bit uncomfortable with the situation and ends the dinner prematurely. Meanwhile, Miranda prepares to spray her 100% solution on all of Metropolis via the fruit fly spraying. As she is preparing, a little bit spills out, and her cat licks it up. She quickly locks it up in a cage, but it suddenly breaks through the metal and runs off. This potency greatly satisfies Miranda. The next morning at the staff meeting, after telling Clark how strangely Lex had behaved, Lois receives a note from Miranda which asks her to meet with her at the airport so she can divulge her secrets. Perry then lets everyone know that the lawsuit was dropped and Alice let him back in. Cat then enters and Lois points out that the spray must have gotten her pretty good too -- she was even more insatiable than usual! Cat replies with a sincere, "What spray?" Jimmy then spots April in the newsroom and goes out to see her. He apologizes for his behavior and explains that he was not himself. She is a bit impressed with his true self and comments that he is kind of cute. Noticing the rest of the staff watching them, she takes him in hand and gives him a deep kiss, prompting his astonishment and the applause of the onlookers! Lex awakes and Nigel explains how he fell asleep at the table. Then, remembering Miranda's words about affecting all of Metropolis, he decides it's time to contact Superman. Meanwhile, at the airport, Miranda has knocked out Lois with some spray. Lex finds Clark at the Planet, and Clark wants to have a few choice words with Lex about his behavior with Lois. After Lex explains about Miranda's spraying him, he tells Clark that she plans to spray the pure solution over all of Metropolis. And then, when Jimmy reminds him about the fruit fly spraying, the two figure out how she plans to do it. Lois regains consciousness to find herself being lowered slowly into a vat of acid. Superman arrives in the nick of time and rescues her by pushing the vat away. He then flies off and catches the plane. Miranda tries to initiate the spraying, but Superman inhales the gas and then ties off the tubes to the tanks. After he blows the gas back up onto her, she follows him back to the airport. Lex arrives as they land, and he rushes to check on Lois, but she runs past him to meet Superman. She wonders aloud if the gas had any effect on him, prompting Superman to turn his head and give a smirk to the camera. He turns back and exclaims, "Lois Lane, I love you!" She responds that she knows that he's under the influence of the compound, but she gives in and kisses him anyway. Lex, nauseated by the display ("I may throw up."), walks up and breaks them apart. As she's being carted away, Miranda asks Lex if he'll wait for her. He responds with an abrupt "No!" Superman assures him that he diluted the solution before he used it on her, so she won't be permanently affected. Later, Lex admits to Nigel that he is now in a hopeless situation -- he's fallen deeply in love with Lois. Nigel claims that it's the potion talking, but Lex insists that it is true love. Back at the Planet, Lois finally admits (somewhat, anyway) that some tiny, insignificant part of her may be attracted to Clark. She also explains how she could even possibly think that Clark looked *anything* like Superman -- "Every woman in love thinks that her man looks like Superman!" ***************************************************************************** 11. HONEYMOON IN METROPOLIS ----------------------- US Airdate 12/12/93 Written by Dan Levine Directed by James A. Contner It's Friday night at the Daily Planet, and Lois begins to pack up her things. Curious about her destination, Clark and the others begin to pester her for information -- they believe she's got a big scoop. However, to their astonishment, she actually has reservations at the Lexor Hotel for a night of relaxation -- in the Honeymoon Suite, no less! Even as she leaves, they continue to doubt both her intention and her ability to relax. Lois glides across the room in her hotel-furnished bathrobe, snacking on pretzels. She scans the television channels, but finds only romantic movies. Eventually, she makes her way into the tub for a warm bubble bath, but her peace is interrupted by the ring of the telephone. On the other end, Clark states his continued disbelief and asks how the view is. The question prompts her to turn her head and look out of the window, where she sees an odd meeting in a building across the street. She struggles to the other end of the tub, where she withdraws her binoculars from a bag, and then scrambles back to the window to see Congressman Harrington delivering a file and receiving a payoff. After scrambling to get her camera and take some photos, she accidentally drops the phone into the tub. Upon retrieving it, she tells Clark that she needs to get back to her "relaxing" and hangs up. The next day, the photos have been blown up, and it becomes clear that the file Harrington delivered was marked "Top Secret." Clark points out that Harrington is chairman of the House Defense Committee. When they fail to recognize the purchaser of the file, Perry mysteriously mentions that he might have to contact *the* source. They determine that the office was owned by Apocalypse Consulting, and so to stake out the building, Perry assigns Lois and Clark to go undercover as newlyweds at the Lexor. After Clark carries Lois across the threshold, with Jimmy carrying in their bags, he has to restrain her from attacking the concierge, who had made some lewd "newlywed" remarks. Cat then drags in and exhibits that she is very familiar with the room -- she opens the hidden bar and fixes herself a drink, then proceeds to take a seat in a nearby chair and turn on the music with a clap of her hands. Lois comments on Cat's familiarity with the room, and Cat responds by lifting the cover over the side table to expose her name carved into the wood. That night, after setting up the video camera, Lois assures Clark that they will show -- they had marked the meeting on the wall calendar in the office. Lois decides to go to bed, but as she heads towards the bedroom, she is halted by Clark, who suggests that they flip for the bed. When she responds that she'll lend him a pillow, he counters that they should alternate. When she nixes that idea, he suggests with a grin that they share the bed -- she agrees to alternate! Clark tries to get comfortable on the couch, but when he turns over, he rolls off the couch with a thud. Lois, hearing the noise, starts toward the bedroom door to check on him. As she does so, Clark floats himself back up to the couch, but she fails to open the door. A little bit later, Clark walks up to the bedroom door, tempted to knock. He then gets the urge to peek through the door, but manages to stop himself. As he lies back down on the couch, he calls out to tell her good-night. When she fails to respond, he continues to tell her good-night until she replies the same. He tries to get a bit more comfortable again, but when he tries to fluff the pillow, he does it a bit too hard, causing the pillow to explode. Clark wakes Lois from her slumber to tell her that the men are back. After turning up the sound on the listening device, they hear that the other man's name is Roark. They overhear Roark mention something about Harrington's assurance that the tests of the new system will go as planned. He also asks him to initiate a new vote. Harrington tries to explain that a new vote can only follow after the analysis of the test results, but Roark just laughs and intimidates Harrington. After they leave, Clark turns to Lois and asks what they just saw. Lois is stumped, but she believes that it's bigger than she had initially thought. Clark wakes up the next morning and begins the day with a blur of push-ups. Lois comes out of the bedroom, prompting him to slow down. Once she sees him, she notices that he is staring at her. Paranoid, she asks what he's looking at, and he responds that she looks "pretty decent in the morning." Lois becomes slightly bashful and then returns the compliment. The concierge comes in with the coffee Clark had ordered, and upon noticing the remnants of the pillow, he makes yet another lewd remark. Meanwhile, Lex is on the phone with an Admiral, and they are speaking of a test of something called "Shockwave." In the Planet conference room, Jimmy tells everyone that he discovered nothing on Roark, but Apocalypse paid up-front for a five-year lease on the office. Perry comes in and explains that Roark is an international arms dealer and an expert in electronic weapons systems. They bounce around a few theories, but without more information, they can't proceed. Perry assigns Cat to stick with Harrington (since he's known as a womanizer), and he assigns Jimmy to follow Roark next time they see him. Back in the hotel room, Lois and Clark pass the time by playing a few games, which demonstrates Lois' overly competitive nature. When Clark brings up this character flaw, asking why she always needs to win, she becomes defensive. Clark claims that he plays games just to be playing them. She responds then that if he loses and she wins, everyone is happy! Clark hears a noise in the hall and uses his x-ray vision to discover that the maid is about to come in. He grabs Lois (*very* much to her surprise) and throws her onto the bed. She begins to protest, but Clark silences her with a passionate kiss. The maid enters during the kiss, apologizes for the intrusion, and then leaves. After she leaves, Clark lets Lois up. Her only comment is "Doesn't anyone knock anymore!?" Later, Lois asks Clark if he has ever lived with anyone. They both admit that they haven't and that they believe it would be kind of spooky -- never being alone, sharing all the time, etc. Suddenly, Roark and Harrington reappear in the office, where Harrington informs him that the test is on schedule for tomorrow morning. Roark is delighted and comments that after it fails, the path will be opened to his system. When Harrington asks exactly what is going to happen with the test, Roark decides to show him a video of their expectations. When they close the shutters to watch the video, Lois utters her disappointment and Clark mutters, "lead-lined." Lois asks what he means by that, and he blows it off by saying he doesn't know. When the shutters are reopened, Harrington is white as a sheet, shocked that it will affect millions of people. After they leave the office again, a printout begins to arrive from Jimmy, and while Clark reads it, Lois tells him that she's going down to the Lobby. While she's gone, Clark's parents call and ask how things are going. When he mentions that things will be great if Lois lets him have his turn in the bad, they get *entirely* the wrong idea. Then Clark sees that Lois has broken into the office across the street. When he asks, "Lois, what are you doing," his parents' imaginations continue to go wild! As Lois begins to make some photocopies of a few files, Roark and his henchman return to the office. Clark hangs up on his parents, explaining that Lois is in trouble and then rushes to the other building. As Lois dashes into the closet, she unknowingly drops her credit card behind her. Superman rushes in past Roark at super- speed and activates the sprinklers with his heat vision. They leave, and Lois follows moments later. Back in the hotel room, Lois walks in dripping wet to find Clark still reading the printout. She rushes to the video camera, only to find that Clark "forgot" to reload the tape! (The crushed tape is concealed in the trash by Clark.) She angrily storms off to the bedroom and slams the door behind her. After discovering the joys of sharing the bathroom, Lois and Clark proceed to the Planet, where everyone peruses the images Lois obtained. One of the files, the inside of which Lois did not have a chance to scan, is labeled "Tsunami" -- which Cat mistakenly believes to be some Japanese dish. After they explain to her that a tsunami is a tidal wave, they look at the scans of the "Shockwave" file. Jimmy reports that Harrington's committee had voted on a project Shockwave -- it had passed 8-0 with Harrington abstaining. Cat then details Harrington's escapades for the previous day, which ended with her sharing drinks with him! After the meeting that Lois and Clark witnessed, Jimmy followed Roark to a waterfront warehouse, but he could not see in for a lack of windows. Under the urgency of the test at dawn the next morning, Perry decides that it is time to consult "the" source -- Sore Throat! Sore Throat, whose name comes from his allergy problems, meets with Perry, Lois, and Clark in a parking garage. He informs them that Shockwave is an experimental coastal defense system designed by Luthor Technologies. Roark's system had been runner-up to Luthor's -- Luthor's was the more sophisticated system. It has the ability to perceive a threat and produce an automatic response -- it would put up a sonic curtain capable of destroying the threat. He advises them that if Roark knows the pending test will fail, then he must have sabotaged the test. Since reporting the knowledge of the project or of Roark is sure to cause them federal trouble, Sore Throat tells them their best option is to leave town. As he leaves, he mentions in passing that Roark is also completely insane. Deciding that they have no other option than to print their story and hope that it can stop Roark, Lois and Clark return to the Lexor to gather their evidence. But when they arrive, they find the room has been trashed, all of their evidence is either gone or destroyed, and Lois' credit card is stuck to the back of the door with a large knife. As Lois goes to check out the bedroom, Clark scans the room with his x-ray vision. Spotting a bomb in the couch with only seconds to detonation, he runs over and sits on the couch over the bomb. When it goes off, the couch leaps up into the air, but Clark absorbs the brunt of the explosion, causing little or no damage. After receiving Lois' scolding for just sitting there, Clark then looks across the street to find that the office has been emptied as well. That night, Lois breaks into the dock warehouse to which Jimmy had followed Roark. Finding Harrington tied up, she begins to take pictures, but is caught by Roark's henchman. Back at the Planet, Perry informs the others that nobody will listen to him about the sabotage. When Jimmy mentions that Lois is nowhere to be found, Clark calls the only person who could help them, Lex Luthor! When Lex arrives, he angrily demands to know how they know of the testing. Clark spills all they know about Roark and Harrington, and Lex agrees that Roark must be planning to sabotage the test. However, none of them can figure out a means of sabotage until Cat, trying to figure out what kind of food they should go for, mentions tsunami. Roark, having tied Lois and Harrington to the dock, bids them adieu and heads out to get beyond the appropriate safety radius. Clark arrives at the dock just after the test occurs and begins to untie the two of them. But suddenly, Lois looks up and spots the incoming tidal wave. Clark uses his super-strength to break the ropes and then orders them to get out of there. As they leave, he runs toward the end of the pier, opening his shirt to reveal the familiar costume. He flies into the wave itself and begins digging into the sea floor with a drill-like motion, resulting in the creation of an undersea trench. Lois looks back just as the wave is about to hit, and she sees it suddenly start to subside. Later, Harrington tells the press that he was only working undercover as part of a sting operation to net Roark. Luthor Technologies ends up with the contract for the coastal defense network. Clark talks with his parents on the phone that night, apologizing that his comments had mislead them about the hotel situation. He insists that he and Lois are just friends. He also explains that if he and Lois *were* to become involved, it would be something more meaningful and permanent -- not impulsive. Unable to contain her giggling, Martha bursts into laughter after asking Clark, "You really liked being with her, didn't you!?: Jonathan joins in immediately thereafter. After they finally hang up, the phone rings again, and Lois is on the other end. As a repayment for her troubles, the Lexor has put her back up in the honeymoon suite. She comments that she has the drapes closed this time! They exchange some avoiding small talk and bid each other good-night. As Lois begins to drift off in her room, Clark tries to get more comfortable in his bed. Once again, when he tries to fluff the pillow, it explodes, and a grinning Clark is drowned in feathers. ***************************************************************************** Jeffery D.
