ILLUSIONS OF GRANDEUR --------------------- US Airdate 1/23/94 Written by Thania St. John Directed by Michael Watkins On a fine Sunday afternoon, two young children race down the steps of a massive mansion. Finally coming to a halt against a large tree in the vast yard, Nick exclaims, "I'm faster than a speeding bullet!" Chris points out the glaring error in his statement, and Nick recants -- but he still claims, "...I'm faster than you!" The boys begin to tussle playfully on the ground until they notice a large box on the lawn. Following the instructions on the lid, Nick steps inside of the box and waits for his surprise. When nothing happens, Chris suggests that the lid needs to be closed. Nick kneels down, allowing his friend room to close the box, but when Nick fails to answer his calls, Chris becomes suspicious. He reopens the box to find Nick has vanished! The morning meeting in the Daily Planet newsroom finds Jimmy trying to convince Perry to allow him to follow up on a story about the Queen of England dancing in a fountain. Perry balks on the story and turns to his star reporters. Lois mentions the fact that the kidnappings still haven't been solved -- 7 children from wealthy families have all been kidnapped within the past three months and returned when enormous ransoms were paid by their parents. Strangely, none of the children had any memories of the experience. Unfortunately, Perry is tired of printing stories which consist of no new leads. Cat arrives fashionably late, dressed in an ultra-conservative business suit. After some heckling about her unusual attire, she explains that she has a date with Arthur Chow, an extremely conservative and extremely wealthy businessman, for a charity ball. Clark's super-hearing picks up the soft sobs of a woman who has seated herself at his desk. He exits the meeting, tailed by Lois, and asks if he might be able to help her. She tells them that her son has been kidnapped by mistake. She further explains that her name is Rose Collins and that she works as a housekeeper for Mr. Moskal, a wealthy developer who built many of the buildings in Metropolis. Their children play together regularly, and... Clark finishes her sentence that the kidnappers took the wrong child. She begs them to write a story informing the kidnappers of their mistake. Lois and Clark proceed to the Moskal home, where they hope that Chris can give them additional information. At first, he is reluctant to help, as he believes his father will take care of the situation. But Clark convinces him to describe the box, which he says was decorated with stars and a moon. Before they can learn anything else, the Moskals return from the trip and tell Lois and Clark that *they* will be paying the ransom in full tomorrow night at the exchange point -- the Hobbs River Carnival -- and that the kidnappers will remain free is not his problem. Back at the Planet, Lois and Clark seem to have hit a dead end, as the police will not talk about the case, and none of the kidnappee's parents will step forward to help. Realizing that their only lead so far is the fact that the means of the kidnapping was a magic box, Clark suggests that they attend the charity ball to which Cat had invited them. Lois reluctantly goes with Clark, but makes it clear that she hates magic. Inside the ball, Perry and Jimmy partake of a hypnotism exhibition, but Perry remains quite skeptical of the whole idea. Dr. Novak, the hypnotist, responds to Perry's disbelief by choosing him as his next subject. Perry is fairly easily put under, and Jimmy volunteers a post-hypnotic suggestion. On stage, the extraordinary illusionist, Darren Romick, entrances the crowd with his magic -- all but Lois, that is. Clark finally figures out that it's the not knowing how the tricks work and not being in control that scares her off about magic. For Romick's final illusion, he brings a couple and their table up on stage, adds an audience member's mink stole, as well as a live cow, and then makes them all disappear. More importantly, the drapery which he uses to cover them all is adorned with a moon and stars decoration -- the lead they needed! Lois and Clark return to see Chris Moskal, but his father refuses to let him talk to them. He explains that he will pay the ransom that night, thereby ending the whole thing. He refuses to assist them. When they return to the Planet, Jimmy is busy reading a story over the wire about how an owner of a large hotel chain has decided to convert all of his hotels into shelters for the homeless. Meanwhile, Cat continues her charade as the clean-cut all- American girl for Arthur Chow. Lois mentions to Clark that Constance, Romick's assistant, has agreed to meet with them. Jimmy suggests that he go with them and write a sidebar, but Lois and Clark don't think that Perry will go for it. Jimmy tells them that he's "got it covered," and when he asks Perry if he may go, he calls him "Chief." This results in Perry pointing two fingers at Jimmy and saying, "That's brilliant, Olsen!" At the magician's club, Lois and Clark explain their theory that a magician is involved. Curious, Lois asks how the illusion involving the cloth in question works, but when Constance begins to explain, Dr. Novak interrupts, telling them that Romick is the greatest ever and wouldn't want his secrets revealed. Recognizing Jimmy, Dr. Novak reveals their little post-hypnotic suggestion -- every time Jimmy calls Perry "Chief," Perry will tell him he's brilliant! Romick then enters and tells the reporters that they are not welcome there during non-business hours. He then performs a quick illusion, which results in his vanishing. Back at the newsroom, they confirm that there were only two of the box described by Chris ever made, and they both belong to Romick. Jimmy then finds yet another odd story, this time with a photograph -- the Pope dancing at a Madonna concert! He approaches Perry and asks the "Chief" is he can work on the story. Of course, Perry responds that Jimmy is brilliant. Clark warns Jimmy that what he's doing is at least a bit unethical, but Jimmy points out that he's not forcing Perry to print his stories. That evening, Lois announces that she plans to be there for the exchange at the carnival. Clark insists that it's too dangerous, and to his surprise, Lois agrees with him. However, as soon as he leaves, she tells Jimmy to grab his camera. They arrive as Moskal shows up. He gets out of his car and shouts that he is there. The lights suddenly spring to life, and he sees Nick standing beside the Merry-go-round. Superman swoops down from the sky and attempts to grab the boy, but his arms grasp nothing but air -- it was only a hologram. He then heads around to another car hidden off to the side, but upon reaching it, a dark figure emerges and manages to rapidly hypnotize the Man of Steel. The villain tells him that when he hears the words "the moon and the stars," he will not be able to tell wrong from right. At that moment, Nick bursts from the car and begins to run off, but under orders, Superman rushes over, grabs Nick, and returns him to the car. As he flies away, Lois is stunned in disbelief. The next morning, Clark returns to the office and sees Lois' headline about the incident. After reading the article, he asks if it's all true. When he mumbles something about not remembering any of it, Lois points out that he wasn't there, so he wouldn't remember anything. They try to convince Perry that they have enough to write some of the story, but he nixes the idea, claiming that they need more evidence. Jimmy mentions that they just need to find the kidnappers and turn them over to the police "chief," prompting another brilliance reminder. Jimmy is starting to be bugged by it now, however. Lois returns to speak with Constance again, who explains that Romick has built up a some very large debts via gambling, but that around three months ago, he had suddenly found money again -- he had claimed there had been an anonymous benefactor, but Lois believes that he is the kidnapper. As she leaves the club, Romick steps from behind the curtains. Meanwhile, Clark has gotten Dr. Novak to examine each of the returned kidnappees through hypnosis. He discovers that all of the children have been given a suggestion so strong that he can only identify that it is there -- he can't remove it. He mentions that the only memory they seem to have is something about a moon and stars. When Clark hears those words, he gets up, mutters "wrong is right," and exits the office without a word, even ignoring the assignment to cover a story about a rogue general about to fire his nukes in the Persian Gulf. On her way back to the Planet, Lois finds Superman knocking over parking meters. Clark, after waking up in his own bed in costume, returns home to Smallville, where his parents suggest that it's possible that he could be hypnotized -- his brain *was* raised to think like a human. On the other hand, they offer, there may be something about him which makes him able to fight off the suggestion. Regardless, they advise him to find the person responsible. After he returns to the Planet, Lois lets him in on everything that she learned from Constance, and about what she saw from Superman. They decide to return once more to the magician's club that evening. While there, Lois decides to snoop backstage, and begins to leave the room. But Romick spots her and chooses her to be his assistant for the next trick -- the sword box! He places her snugly into the box and then begins to slide the swords in. With each sword, Clark uses his x-ray vision to make certain that the swords are safe. However, he determines that the final sword is real and is forced to melt it with his heat vision so that Romick can't get it into the box. He then throws a large cloth over the box, and the whole thing disappears. Lois slides down a long slide, and at the bottom she finds a nearly comatose Nick, his eyes glued to the Magic Channel. Lois looks for a way out, but the Magic Channel eventually ensnares her as well. Clark, realizing Lois to be gone, searches through the floor until he finds her. After changing into Superman, he bursts through the floor and punches the TV to end the hypnotic spell. He informs Lois and Nick that the channel was broadcasting subliminal messages that he was able to pick up with his vision. As they try to leave, Lois finds Dr. Novak's body in one of Romick's boxes, and they are all then stopped by Romick. However, he pleads innocent when they accuse him, and Constance steps forward as the mastermind of the operation. She utters the phrase "the moon and the stars," and the four of them snap into hypnotic spells. She reminds Romick that he had killed Novak under a hypnotic suggestion and explains to them all that the Pope, the Queen, etc. had been test cases for her new hypnotic program. Determined to eliminate her threats, she orders Nick into the sword box, Romick to climb to the top of the building and jump, and Lois to place herself into a huge water tank. Superman closes the lead and turns on the valve. Constance then orders Superman to fly up to her satellite, already in orbit, and activate the Magic Channel by simply throwing the broadcast switch. As he proceeds towards the satellite, he begins to fight the suggestion and remembers what his parents told him. Breaking free from her spell, he hurries back to the Magician's Club just in time to catch the diving Romick. He then quickly releases Nick and rescues Lois. Constance tries to re-initiate the hypnosis, but Superman explains that they don't have to do anything they don't want to. When her power fails, she retreats into a hall of mirrors with a gun. Superman follows her in, and Lois then follows him shortly thereafter. But Constance manages to grab Lois and holds the gun to her. Superman spots the two and attempts to disable the gun with his heat vision, but it only serves to shatter a mirror. Finally, he takes a mirror and elevates it above the others. Then, after prompting Constance to shoot as his reflection, he catches her by surprise and disarms her. Nick is reunited with his Mom and Cat loses Arthur Chow to an exotic dancer, of all things! Lois points out that she had already decided on a wedding present for Cat -- personalized stationary "from the desk of Cat Chow!" Everyone giggles except Cat. Finally, Jimmy pitches his idea of a sidebar on the miscellaneous odd behaviors all being linked to Constance, and Perry thinks that it's "brilliant!" Jimmy explodes, saying that he wants an honest opinion about his work, but then Clark tells Jimmy that he had Dr. Novak remove Perry's post-hypnotic suggestion during his last visit. So Perry actually did like Jimmy's idea! As Jimmy goes off to work on his piece, Lois comments to Clark that there is no such thing as magic -- it's all a trick that you just have to figure out. He tells her to close her eyes and count to three, and when she finally gives in, he rushes down to the street at super-speed, buys a vase of roses, returns to the office, and places them on her desk -- all before she finishes counting. (Down on the street, the vendor is puzzled as a wad of money suddenly replaces one of his arrangements!) She opens her eyes to the flowers and asks how he did that. Clark replies, "If I told you, it wouldn't be magic!" ***************************************************************************** 15. THE IDES OF METROPOLIS ---------------------- US Airdate 2/6/94 Written by Deborah Joy LeVine Directed by Philip J. Sgriccia At the close of a highly publicized trial, Eugene Latterman is found guilty of murder in the first degree. Even as he pleads his innocence, he is sentenced to life without possibility of parole. Later, as Eugene is waiting to be transported to prison, Lois attempts to convince the guard to let her talk to Eugene. Finally using a bribe of football tickets, she succeeds. But when the guard opens the door, they find that Eugene has escaped! Lois promptly retrieves her tickets. Meanwhile, Clark returns to his apartment after a night patrol as Superman, where he finds his father. Noticing that Jonathan is upset, Clark sits down with him and asks what's wrong. He responds that he thinks that Martha is having an affair with a younger man -- her art teacher. When Clark asks for proof, he reveals a portrait of Martha done by the artist -- and Clark's eyes bulge as he finds himself looking at his mother...nude! The police determine that Eugene took the door's electronic key code from the courthouse central computer. Furthermore, a gun is missing from the evidence room. Detective Reed, the officer responsible for Eugene's capture, vents her anger at the guard and at Lois, but she allows Lois to leave. As Lois begins to start her car outside the courthouse, Latterman pops up from her back seat with the gun and tells her just to drive. Lois urges him to give up, but he maintains his innocence, claiming to know that Lois believes him. Finally, he convinces her to help him. The next morning, Lois' mind wanders during the morning conference, and Perry asks if the Latterman decision is still weighing on her mind. She once again claims that he is innocent, but Perry points out that he had signed a confession. Lois counters that the confession was signed under duress and without an attorney present. And when Clark points out that he and Lena, the victim's wife, were having an affair, Lois claims that Henry Harrison's brutality toward his wife justified her affair. The topic having hit a nerve, Clark exclaims that there's no excuse for having an affair. He proceeds to think aloud, "If it's true..." As the meeting begins to come to a close, Lena Harrison enters the newsroom. She explains to Lois and Clark that she is worried about Eugene. She confirms that Henry was a cruel and violent man and claims that Eugene killed him for her. She asks them to write a story asking Eugene to turn himself in. As Lena is on her way out, Detective Reed finds her way to Lois' desk, where she asks if Lois has any idea about Latterman's whereabouts. Lois feigns ignorance, but Detective Reed leaves unconvinced. After her talk with Reed, Lois finds Clark in the newsroom and orders him to tell her his biggest secret -- she needs blackmail material for what she's about to tell him! He admits that his mother may be having an affair. Lois at first doesn't believe that to be a big enough secret, but when he points out that their marriage has lasted for nearly thirty years, she makes him swear not to tell anyone what he's about to hear. She then proceeds to tell him that Eugene is hiding out at her apartment. Clark backs down from his promise almost immediately, explaining that she can't make him hold to that kind of promise. She pleads to him just to hear Eugene's story. If he still doesn't believe, then he can call the police. She points out that he should do it because he is her partner, and he responds, "Only when it's convenient to you!" But finally, he gives in. They proceed to her apartment, where Eugene explains that it wasn't really an affair, because Lena didn't want to consummate until she had left her husband. He also explains that there was more bad blood between him and Harrison -- when they had both been working for LexComp, Eugene had seen an experimental program of Harrison's called "The Ides of Metropolis." Henry had become livid over that simple sighting. Clark then tells him that Lena had fingered him as the killer, bringing a puzzled look to Eugene's face. Lois drags Clark into the kitchen. Clark is ready to call the cops, but Lois begs him to give her 48 hours. Before he can agree, Eugene comes and tells them that he had been protecting Lena -- *she* had killed her husband. The next day, after hearing nothing but praise for Harrison from his secretary, Lois and Clark go to see Lex Luthor. When they arrive, they find Lex shooting skeet off his balcony. When Clark asks him what happens if he misses, Lex quickly calculates the speed with which a target would hit a bystander far below and announces that said bystander would probably be killed instantly. He then faces Clark and smugly adds, "I never miss." Lex then goes on to explain that Harrison, when he worked for LexComp, was an original thinker who was ahead of his time. He then confirms for Lois that Harrison had lost his job just a month before his retirement as part of a restructuring of LexComp. Just before they leave, Lois admits to Lex that she believes in Eugene's innocence. After the two have left, Nigel confirms -- at Lex's request -- that LexComp's technicians have still been reporting a computer slowdown. Back at the Planet, Lois' doubts about the verdict are augmented when Jimmy plays for them a videotape he made that afternoon -- of Lena Harrison meeting someone for a rendezvous at the Lexor Hotel! Meanwhile, Clark takes his father to the gym -- Jonathan thinks that Martha wants him to change -- for a workout. They are approached by an attractive young woman, who offers to show them around. Though Clark refuses, Jonathan accepts. Later, Clark shows his father to a bench-press machine, but before he can begin the exercise, a muscle-bound jerk comes up and informs them that they have to move -- he *always* uses this machine at this time. When Jonathan gives up the machine, Clark tells him that they'll wait, and the guy tells them they may have to wait some time -- once he gets going, it's hard to stop. But as he tries to begin, Clark presses down on the weights with his finger, making it impossible for the man to lift. He eventually gives up in frustration, claiming the machine is broke, but Clark tells Jonathan to get in and try. With Clark's unseen assistance, he proceeds to easily press the weight. The woman from before is duly impressed and asks Jonathan to spot her on her next exercise. Later, Lois and Clark meet back at her place, where they find that Eugene has been straightening out the directories on her personal computer. She asks how he got in, but he points out that "Superman" was a much too obvious password. Upon Clark's request, Eugene continues the story from the previous day. When he saw the program, Harrison had become very angry and told Eugene that he knew about the affair. When Harrison began talking badly about Lena, Eugene had threatened him. Suddenly, there is a knock on the door, prompting Clark to peek through the door with his x-ray vision. He announces that it's Detective Reed -- "it sounded like a police kind of knock." Clark and Eugene head to the back room to hide. When Lois answers the door, Reed presents a search warrant. However, since Clark has Eugene hiding out on the ledge (Clark is floating behind him, pressing him against the wall), the police find nothing. Reed apologizes and heads out the door. Lois stops her on the way out and announces that Lena killed her husband, but Reed replies that Lena has an airtight alibi. At the newsroom, Lois tells Clark that everyone lies, but Clark tells her that he would *never* lie to his wife. Lois then gives him a scenario: his wife has just had her hair completely redone, and it's ghastly. She did it just to please him, and she hopefully asks him what he thinks! Clark at first responds that his wife would never change herself to make him happy, but when Lois calls it a cop out answer, he replies that he would tell her that he loves her and that he liked her hair better the way it was, but all that matters is that she is happy. Lois disgustedly pities the poor woman for being married to "Mr. Always Right!" Perry then calls the two of them into his office, where he lets them know that he knows about Latterman. But as soon as they leave his office, he no longer knows nor wants to know anything more. Back at Lois' apartment, Eugene tells them that he noticed a slow down of her software, so he tapped into the Daily Planet system, where he discovered the same slowdown. He then explains that Harrison's program was actually a virus designed to destroy all other existing software. Such a virus would be a disaster as almost everything in the country depends on computers -- banks, the stock market, air traffic control systems, and even nuclear weapons. He then tells them that his only hope of stopping the virus is for them to get him into MUT, Metropolis University of Technology. Meanwhile, after playing on Lex's hunch, Nigel reports that LexComp has discovered that the slowdown is the result of a virus. Lex solemnly points out that truly no one is invulnerable. He'd often wondered about just such a sort of the ultimate terrorism -- the nation's entire infrastructure could collapse. He remarks that everyone is a slave to the systems that we create, and wonders if he could, or would, be able to drive away and leave it all behind... Nigel responds, "I think not." Martha finally shows up at Clark's apartment, but Jonathan is not there when she arrives. She neither confirms or denies the affair to Clark, but she is interrupted by Jonathan's entrance. He comes in carrying peonies -- her favorite -- and she asks if they are for her. He tells her that there's no one else, and she tells him that the same is true for her. She continues by telling him that her age won't stop her from growing, trying new things, or meeting new and interesting people. All she expects of him is to be there for her and understand her needs. Meanwhile, a dark figure enters Harritech, Harrison's company, after hours and fires up the main system. At the same time, Reed finds Lois at the Daily Planet and tells her that when Harrison's body was exhumed, it turned out to actually be the body of a homeless man who had lived in the basement of the Harritech building. She points out that computer records *can* be falsified and that Lena had been the one who identified the body. However, she still will continue to search for Eugene -- for all she knows, he might have killed *two* people! Just then, all of the Daily Planet computers freeze, and "The Ides of Metropolis" appears on all the screens. Just a little later, newscasts report that the world's financial markets are collapsing and banks and airports are closing down as a result of the disastrous virus. At MUT, Eugene is trying to break into the virus' programming in order to develop a cure. After his other ideas fail, Lois suggests that he work with the literary reference -- "beware the Ides of March" from "Julius Caesar." Before they can fully explore the avenue, Reed burst into the room. Lois kicks her gun away, and Clark picks it up. She and Lois face off in a series of karate moves, neither of them actually accomplishing anything, until Clark brings them back to the reality of the situation. Finally, they convince Reed to let Eugene at least try to stop the virus. Lois and Detective Reed head over to Harritech, where the dark figure gets the drop on them and introduces himself as Henry Harrison. Lena joins him and they explain how they faked his death to place him beyond suspicion of responsibility for the virus. Then, in her typical smart-mouthed manner, Lois barbs, "So what are you going to do now? Kill us?" Back at MUT, Eugene has broken into the virus with the password "Et Tu, Brute?" and has managed to manufacture a cure. However, he explains to Clark that there is not enough time, as the antidote disk must be manually inserted in three centers located at points across the country. Clark claims to know a way and leaves with the disk. Lois and Reed are thrown into some sort of refuse room, where Reed comments on Lois' inane "kill us" remark. Lois then points out that Reed had failed to call for backup. Even as they continue to bicker, Superman reaches the first site, and the antidote begins to take effect. Lois and Reed sit down and "bond," with Reed asking Lois how she gets her hair so bouncy. Lois tells her that she wishes she could get her nails to look as good. To Lois' disbelief, Reed points out that she can -- they're $1.98 at LexSave! Superman reaches the second site, and Henry and Lena begin frantically trying to re-initiate the virus. Lois and Reed meanwhile begin discussing how they each had to overcome difficult odds since their professions are very much "boys' clubs," but they are interrupted as the walls begin to close in on them! They try unsuccessfully to brace the walls, and then they scream for help. But as Superman reaches the third and final site, the cleansing of the virus results in a power outage at Harritech, releasing Lois and Reed. [Huh?] Reed grabs her gun, Lois grabs a flashlight, and together they apprehend the Harrisons. In the wake of the scare, Lex and Nigel celebrate the fact that, with all things considered, LexCorp came out relatively unscathed. Lex then comments that another such virus could be found which could not be stopped. Such a virus would be horrible -- unless he were the one in control of it! He then turns and shoots at a recently released target, but he misses. As he watches it fall rapidly toward the ground fall below, he mutters, "Oops... Nigel! Better call..." Then Nigel finishes the thought with him, "the lawyers." At the Planet, Perry congratulates Lois on her great story and her instincts. Both she and Clark thank him for not blowing the whistle on them. After Perry leaves, Clark simply sits there and waits for the "I told you so!" Lois doesn't quite use those words, but the message is clearly there as she tells Clark that sometimes a reporter must follow his instincts and not just the facts. As they leave the newsroom, she mentions that she somehow doesn't believe that he told her his biggest secret. Grinning, he replies, "Well just to put your little mind at ease...you're right!" ***************************************************************************** Jeffery D.
